SmackDown Women’s Champion Carmella vs. Asuka
Published by: |   (0) Comments      Read MORE      Filed Under: Coverage, Match Preview, PPV, Smackdown Live

What can ruin any good Mellabration? Well, The Empress of Tomorrow coming for your title is a solid start.

At WWE Money in the Bank, Asuka aims to unseat SmackDown Women’s Champion Carmella at the same pay-per-view where the current titleholder’s march to championship glory began one year ago.

Carmella has always been about opportunity, something that served her well when she won the first-ever Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match last year and secured a Women’s Championship opportunity whenever she wanted. After the IIconics assaulted Charlotte Flair on the April 10 edition of SmackDown, she cashed in her coveted contract and pinned The Queen for the gold following a wicked kick to the face. Her success was further amplified by her victory over The Queen in their rematch at WWE Backlash. The Staten Island Princess may scream at a fever pitch, and she may be outspoken, but she is undoubtedly armed with the ability to remain on top for many Mellabrations to come. It remains to be seen, however, if she is ready for Asuka.

Prior to WrestleMania, The Empress of Tomorrow stood undefeated for well over 900 days. She won the first-ever Women’s Royal Rumble and the groundbreaking WWE Mixed Match Challenge Tournament alongside The Miz. She still stands as the longest-reigning NXT Women’s Champion in history. On The Grandest Stage of Them All, Asuka fell to Charlotte in an extremely hard-fought title bout, but she remains as dangerous as ever. And now that she has come to SmackDown LIVE, she is ready to claim the blue throne as any cost. The dynamic Superstar possesses an arsenal like few others, and if Carmella is not careful, she will possess her title as well.

Will Mella be Money? Or will the co-branded pay-per-view be all about Asuka? Find out at WWE Money in the Bank, Sunday, June 17, at 8 ET/5 PT, streaming live on WWE Network!

We see Carmella’s dressing room door, and we’ll get her royal Mellabration…NEXT!

An old dude in colonial-era attire comes out to introduce the woman who beat Charlotte Flair twice, the Smackdown champion of all women, god save CARMELLA! A trio of royal guards with the big furry hats come out, with one of them holding the Women’s Title belt on a pillow, then Carmella comes out, grabs her belt, and skips down to the ring to address her public. She wanted to give the fans the opportunity to show her how much they love her, so for the next ten seconds or so, they can feel free to shower her with as much love as she deserves for being the first Ms Money In The Bank and Women’s Champion. The fans boo her (I just noticed she has a tiara hair clip, which is a nice touch), and she asks what’s wrong with them for mobbing outside a hospital to catch a glimpse of a baby and they don’t show the Princess of Staten Island the respect she deserves.

She orders them to bow down before her, and a few do. She says the people remind her of the women on the Smackdown roster because none of them think she’s good enough or deserve to be Women’s Champion, but guess what, not-so-great Britain? Mella is money, and Mella is champion, and that makes her better than each and every one of the fans in the audience. She’s better than Charlotte, Sasha, Becky, Nia Jax, Alexa Bliss, and even Ronda Rousey! She’s even better than Trish Stratus and Lita combined! Oh wait, here comes Paige, and Carmella assumes she’s out here to show her people how to properly treat a princess. Paige says it’s great to be home, but she does have something to say to Carmella, and that’s that she has a royal proclamation of her own: her opponent at Money In The Bank. Carmella says she isn’t putting her title on the line at MITB, but Paige says she is, and it’s going to be against THIS WOMAN! She motions to the entryway, and out comes Asuka! Asuka takes the mask off and smiles at Carmella, who grabs her belt, yells at Paige, and heads for the hills.

Wrestlemania Women’s Battle Royal

This match has the weirdest intro. Becky Lynch gets her normal entrance, then every other woman in the match comes out together to the Wrestlemania theme song. This is after Lillian announces Beth as a special guest commentator and doesn’t do it for Paige. Then Bayley gets her entrance, then we get the promo video from Paige’s movie. We come back as Sasha gets her full entrance, and we’re off. Carmella parades around with her briefcase, and everyone jumps her, stomps her out gangland style, and eliminate her. Now Dana Brooke gets caught in the middle of the beating circle, and she gets worked over and thrown out. Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose celebrate eliminating her, and now everyone breaks out in THE most vicious streetfight you’ve ever seen. The NXT ladies clear several of the women out, then Becky yells at the lady in all orange whose name escapes me for wearing her color. Bianca Belair goes to the top rope and hits a 450 splash on Sonya Deville, and she gets tossed. It’s shaping up to be NXT women vs main roster women as we go to commercial.

We’re back as Kairi Sane goes out, and there goes Lana and Orange Lady as well. The Riott Squad is doing very well for themselves in there, eliminating a blond wrestler I didn’t recognize but was probably in the Mae Young Classic. Bianca whips Becky across the back with her hair, but Becky tosses her to the apron and kicks her out before eating a Yakuza Kick from Dakota Kai. Kai with another one for Naomi, but misses a third on Sasha and gets dumped to the floor. Becky and Naomi both appear to have been eliminated as Micke fights off the entire Riott Squad. Mickie goes to the top and Ruby Riott knocks her out. Peyton Royce tries to toss Sarah Logan, but Liv and Ruby get rid of her, and we’re down to the Riott Squad, Natalya, Bayley, and Sasha. Nattie suplexes Ruby and Logan, but Sasha and Bayley double team Nattie and toss her out. They toss Morgan next, then Ruby, then Sarah Logan picks Sasha up, but Bayley knocks her to the floor, and we’re down to Sasha and Bayley. Sasha goes for a handshake, and Bayley takes it…and tosses Sasha to the floor. Wait, looks like Naomi was never eliminated after all, so she’s back in. Naomi with a flying butt butt and then tosses Bayley, and Naomi is our winner!

Winner: Naomi

Your winner, Carmella & Natalya!

As The Road to WrestleMania kicks into overdrive, former SmackDown Women’s Champions Becky Lynch and Naomi will join forces against another former SmackDown Women’s Champion, Natalya, & the first-ever Ms. Money in the Bank winner, Carmella, in a tag team match at WWE Fastlane.

With SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair poised to go to war this Sunday in a title defense against Ruby Riott on the final pay-per-view before The Showcase of The Immortals, it’s anyone’s guess who will be defending and challenging for the title at WrestleMania.

WWE Fastlane is one of the last chances to stake your claim to a title bout at The Showcase of the Immortals, so it’s hardly surprising that Becky’s victory over The Princess of Staten Island on this week’s edition of SmackDown LIVE quickly escalated into a tag team showdown of massive proportions.

Who will walk out of Sunday’s pay-per-view surging toward WrestleMania? Find out when the SmackDown LIVE exclusive pay-per-view streams live, this Sunday at 8 ET/5 PT on the award-winning WWE Network.

Charlotte Flair may have technically defended her SmackDown Women’s Title against Natalya in a Lumberjack Match, but make no mistake: On a night when every SmackDown title was on the line, The Queen was battling the entire SmackDown Women’s division in more ways than one.

Carmella, Lana, Tamina and the entire Riott Squad — Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan & Sarah Logan — were ostensibly there to keep the combatants in the ring, but they quickly revealed themseles to be Natalya’s de facto enforcers during the frantic contest, while Charlotte could only count Naomi as an ally. Each time Natalya was thrown outside the ring, she was returned unharmed, but the Flair scion found herself brutalized by every Lumberjack save Naomi in a bit of deck-stacking that The Queen of Harts was more than happy to exploit. With the Women’s division shouldering most of the dirty work for her, Natalya handily seized control of the match, screaming “You like Charlotte?!” at the WWE Universe as she womanhandled Flair about the ring.

The Lumberjacks continued to pay dividends for Natalya despite the one-woman efforts of Naomi to protect Charlotte during one of the scrums on the outside. But eventually, The Queen of Harts’ security blanket turned against itself when Carmella attempted to cash in her Money in the Bank contract, only to be cut off by Ruby Riott, followed by a brawl among all the Lumberjacks outside the ring.

Charlotte dispatched about 10 birds with one stone when she swooped down on the entire Women’s division with an incredible moonsault to the outside, bringing the bout down to just champion and challenger. While The Queen of Harts seemed primed to lock in the Sharpshooter, Charlotte booted Natalya in the face and instantly applied the agonizing Figure-Eight Leglock, forcing Natalya to submit.

As an exhausted Charlotte returned to the locker room area, Natalya was approached for a post-match interview that quickly took an unexpected turn. Chastising the WWE Universe for disrespecting her and not appreciating her “carrying” the division over the last decade, The Queen of Harts declared she was “turning her back” on the WWE Universe and exited the ring in tears, with the title beyond her grasp and her future uncertain.

– Team Captain Becky Lynch is backstage with Charlotte Flair, Naomi, Tamina Snuka, Lana, Carmella and James Ellsworth. Becky is tired of hearing how SmackDown is the B brand and last week was just a preview of what they will do to the RAW roster at Survivor Series. Becky goes on and says if any Team SmackDown member has anything to speak on, tonight is the night before they get on the same page for Survivor Series. Ellsworth grunts and Becky had a feeling he would have something to say. She sprays him in the face with a water bottle. SmackDown Women’s Champion Natalya appears and says it’s too bad she can’t lead them because she will be too busy defeating RAW Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss. She goes on and says every team has a weak link and it’s up to Becky to find that weak link here. She taunts Flair and Naomi as potential weakest links. Natalya says Flair better not crack under pressure again because if SmackDown loses at Survivor Series, they all will blame her. Natalya walks off and Becky sprays her.
